The POWER of a team!
Don't get me wrong, I am totally down for owning your independence and being able to accomplish things on your own...But when you really think about it, are we every really accomplishing things COMPLETELY by ourselves? I will go out on a limb and answer, No, and if so, the experience was potentially miserable. If you think back to a time when you accomplished something great, think about who was involved. Did you have people supporting you, guiding you, or rooting for you? I bet you did. We are born with an built-in support system or team per se; our families. And as we get older, our teams and support systems start to grow or morph. As humans, we are social beings and most of us desire being connected to others. Often times people form groups around activities or interests yet fail to realize that personal goals, struggles, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities deserve teams too! Teams have played a GIANT role in my life and I think they are so powerful that everyone should try to implement teams in their own life. How do teams fit into your life? Start by realizing there are 3 different types of teams.
"Shared Goal" : This is a goal that is common to everyone on the team, everyone is working towards the same thing. An example of this might be a sports team working to win a championship or a group trying to break a habit.
"Individual Goals" : There are often teams made up of individuals who have slightly different goals but agree to come together to support one another along the way. An example of this type of team is a group of people who want to lost weight. Each person might have their own goal, but they support and hold one another accountable.
"The Support Team" : one of the coolest teams around. This is the type of team where one person is going through a really tough experience and their teammates join them to help them accomplish their goal. An example of this would be a group of people getting together to support a close friends going through Cancer treatment.
Now these team distinctions aren't concrete fact, more distinctions I have made based on my personal experience. But I thought I would share, because it goes to show that people coming together in a shared experience is powerful, regardless of the goal structure. It actually is a proven fact that people are more motivated to participate in something, if there are other people involved. So think about what goal you want to accomplish... and then think how awesome it would be if someone joined you on that journey and held you accountable to the steps you needed to take... Pretty awesome I must say. Support, Motivation, and Accountability have played a huge role in my life and I think these are values that everyone should look to have present in their daily lives.
